Wow this has gone so quick! It’s been an incredibly fun but busy one and I’m so grateful so many couples have trusted me to third wheel on their day to help document all the colourful magic that makes each wedding unique to them. As always, I’ve learned lots. You know what, I like it that way, and I really hope I learn as much in 2025, 2026, and every year that I do this. Learning new things, developing my skills, working in new environments, and meeting awesome people are just some of the reasons I love what I do and why I do this along side my full time job in Fashion.
Here’s a recap of some of my favourite images and most epic memories from 2024.
(You’ll notice the majority of the photos on this page are unposed, real moments – If you are looking for awesome portraits of couples with a little gentle direction, without the cringe, you can check them out here… I’ve put a link to that page at the end of this one too, so you don’t get lost!)
My first wedding of the year was a little different to what you would usually expect and probably one of the most challenging locations I’m ever likely to photograph. It was unpredictable, bumpy, constantly changing, with varied light, bloody freezing and lots and lots of movement. Any guesses? If you went for ‘halfway up a snowy mountain in Italy’ then you’d be right! James and Becky’s skiing and snowboarding wedding was equal parts hectic and relaxed, with a great vibe from start to 4am finish. Skiing + Taking Photos = A whole lot of awesome !
The above photo from their DIY ceremony sums up the weekend perfectly, it was totally unique and 100% what they wanted to do with their favourite people in their favourite place. I ended the weekend exhausted, in black tie (and trainers) at a silent disco, with the biggest smile on my face, and some amazing memories and moments captured.
Want me to join you on the dancefloor (or a mountain)?
Another interesting one involved a ceremony on a boat on the River Thames. Cruising under London Bridge and sailing by the city’s most famous landmarks was quite a surreal experience, and I captured creative shots that include the iconic backdrop as well as the moments that matter.
After a stroll through the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the evening party for Zoe and James’ wedding was at Trafalgar Tavern, with views across the river behind their speeches. Later that evening, a party in the basement saw me squeezing myself into some quite enclosed spaces (I’m 6ft 3, which is about the same height as the ceiling) to capture the madness at the heart of the dancefloor, which was worth every second of crouching, ducking and limboing through the crowd!
When I look back on the galleries I’ve delivered in 2024 I am really proud of every story I have told. I can also see how my style of photography helps me tell those stories. I’d say I’m about 80% a documentary wedding photographer, and the other 20% is a little bit of spice added from my fashion design background. I’ve captured more street-style editorial portraits this year which I really enjoy doing. No posing though, nothing awkward, just you being yourselves.
“As people who don’t love having our picture taken or know how to pose, we were grateful to work with someone who ensured we felt relaxed and ourselves throughout.”
The documentary moments tell the story and capture all the emotion, fun, and atmosphere of a wedding, and the more editorial shots are usually gathered on a short walk with the couple for portraits together. I still do this without forcing poses or pulling people away from the celebrations, and I get some great feedback on how the two styles mix in the final galleries.
“He somehow managed to capture the most beautiful photos without us even knowing! Ben has a wonderful ability to ensure you are just yourselves and that really shines through in his photography!”
Who’d have thought it, this year I’ve picked up some industry awards recognising my work internationally and in the UK. I started the year by finding out I was in the Top 20 photographers of 2023 in the annual at NineDots end year awards, and I finished this year being named as one of the top 100 wedding photographers in the world at number 68, by This is Reportage. This is reportage awards are notoriously hard to pick up with only 50 being given out for every 10,000 entries so to pick up multiple and finish in the final top 100 was a really great way to round off the year.
I’ve also received a few Fearless Photographers’ awards which isn’t half bad, and I’ve tried to take a moment to let that sink in, to acknowledge how hard I’ve been working and how that’s coming across in the quality of my work.
Book an award-winning photographer!
It’s not all about the badges and rankings, although it does help to have recognition from my peers and the industry to reassure me that I’m creating awesome work. Reviews from my couples put that all into perspective, that’s who I’m out to impress in the first place, and I wouldn’t have the images to submit for awards without them trusting me to photograph their epic weddings! You can check out some of the stories on my blog, including luxurious Merchant Taylors’ Hall wedding photography, and a fun outdoor wedding at Micklefield Hall.
“He felt like our wedding’s cheerleader, an excited guest, and a good friend; but at the same time always professional and blended into the background at all the important moments. Not only did Ben capture our day the way we wanted, but he captured hundreds of authentic moments we didn’t even know happened.”
I love to take a creative risk to capture something unique, and working with couples who trust my judgement and skills gives me a great opportunity to do this. Never more so than when I jumped off a big red bus in the city, because I had an idea of a shot that I just knew would work… it would just involve a little run alongside the bus. So off I went, launched into a sprint (graceful as a gazelle… opinions may vary…) and captured another of my favourite shots from 2024. The shot is also accompanied by Marina’s lovely review, mentioning the moment they saw me running alongside them!
“We looked out the window of the double-decker bus taking us to our reception and saw Ben running on the sidewalk alongside the moving bus, taking photos of us. I simply don’t know of any other photographer that would do this, and the crazy thing is, we didn’t even ask him to, he just did it to capture some of our now favourite photos!”
Unscripted, spontaneous moments happen throughout every wedding, I’m always watching (that probably sounds more sinister than intended!) and waiting for those moments to happen. However, sometimes you can see them coming a mile off, like when you see another bride and groom approaching from the other side of the road and they head over for double newlywed hugs!
From the ski slopes in Italy to a festival wedding with typical UK weather. That didn’t stop the tropical-shirt-wearing guests from having an awesome time though! Alisia and Charlie’s wedding festival was super creative, relaxed, and full of chaotic fun. Their friends and family were told to dress for a festival, and they definitely understood the assignment! It was hot, it was wet, it was a mad one, and I loved it!
“He was able to translate the energy and vibe of our wedding through the photos, so that we genuinely feel we can relive our day through them, meaning we’ll be able to cherish those memories forever.”
The vibes are never stronger than at the heart of the party on the dancefloor, late at night. This is part of the day where you’ll find me right there in the mix, photographing the chaos as everyone lets their hair down and busts out their legendary (or questionable) dance moves. Never more so than at Colleen and Ant’s wedding at Milling Barn, because when the groom’s band play a set you can guarantee everyone will be on their feet!
This year, I’ve had the nerve-wracking task of capturing the weddings of a few close friends and colleagues. It means a lot to me that people trust me to capture their day, and it’s always nice to know a few faces around the tables. I’ve also met and made friends with some brilliant people, so if I’ve photographed your wedding, thank you, thanks for having me, for trusting me, and for being yourselves.
As we roll into 2025, I have lots to look forward to. I’ll be busier than ever, and there are more great venues on the list for me to explore, from adventures in Spain and Portugal to a venue right outside my front door in Hertfordshire.
I have a fairly full on ‘day job’ and weddings are my creative outlet, my chance to meet new people and do what I’m passionate about, so I’m excited to share that with you all for another year.
My diary is open for 2026 (and 2027 if you are REALLY organised!) so if you’re looking for relaxed, stylish, and award-winning wedding photography, please do get in touch! Let’s see what the next year brings!
(If you want to see some couple portraits, captured with some gentle direction (zero cringe, I promise!), you can check out some examples of those on my dedicated 2024 couple portraits page.)
